The United States Senate declared June 2021 Great Outdoors Month® by passing Senate Resolution 273 June 16th. This is the fifth year in a row the Senate has recognized Great Outdoors Month®, which began in 1998 under President Bill Clinton and has grown tremendously under ORR’s coordination as a celebration of America’s public lands and waters with events like the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day®, Kids to Parks Day, National Get Outdoors Day, National Fishing and Boating Week, National Marina Days, the Great American Campout and much more.
“Great Outdoors Month® means so much to the outdoor recreation industry, the hundreds of millions of Americans who enjoy responsible recreation on our public lands and waters and the communities who benefit economically from outdoor recreation,” said Jessica Turner, executive director of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. “This year, Great Outdoors Month® is more than a celebration of and getting outside; it is also a call to action for those of us in the outdoor recreation community to continue to push for more and equitable access to the outdoors and to support communities as they build their economies around outdoor recreation. We thank Senators Peters (D-MI) and Daines (R-MT) for sponsoring this resolution and look forward to continuing to improve outdoor recreation experiences for everyone.”
